Perennials for Shady Sites
Gardeners often see shade as the enemy to their garden. In reality, shade
allows you to create a totally different style and feel than you could ever
achieve in a full sun situation. Shady gardens impart a sense of tranquility and
relaxation. Yes, shade gardening does require careful attention to soil
preparation, plant selection and watering. And the plant palette is not as large as
that for sunny sites, but it is much more diverse than many realize. Shade
gardens need to be focused on foliage texture and color, as it is much harder to
have showy flower colors in shady environments, especially in summer and fall.
But shade gardens often require less maintenance than full sun gardens and have
flowers whose color is richer and longer lasting.
The first step in shade gardening is an understanding of what you are working with. Identifying the degree and type of shade is an essential part of the planning process. Light levels can range from very light to quite dense shade. For purposes of clarification, we'll categorize degrees of shade as an aid to proper plant selection.
Think of open shade as a site that is open to the sky but does not receive
any direct sunlight. A good example might be the north side of a building or
fence. Such sites tend to have high light intensity, but air and soil
temperatures that are much cooler than those in full sun situations. A wide range of
perennials, including many often considered full sun only plants, can be
successfully grown here.
A partial shade site receives less light than one in open sun and there is usually some competition for soil moisture and nutrients. It may be a situation where there is sun for a portion of the day and shade for the rest (ideally the shade would be at mid day), or a location where plants receive dappled sunlight throughout the entire day, as under the canopy of certain trees. With proper plant selection and site management, you can easily grow a wide array of beautiful perennials on such sites.
The most challenging situation is where you are confronted with dense shade from thick-canopied trees. Surface roots of trees (especially from Maples) inevitably compound the difficulty. Mature tree roots will out-compete perennial root systems for soil moisture and nutrients. There are few perennials that will perform acceptably in these conditions.
